• Traditionally, the time when the less hardy divers’ thoughts turn to diving both UK and abroad. By now though, Bedsac is busy booking trips to Ireland, the Red Sea and Cyprus!! Uk diving starts this year at Stoney Cove Leicestershire (inland flooded quarry) over Easter where our initial Open Water training takes place.

Before the trips take place we have been busy with the Bedford River Clearance . This year it took place  on 30th March. It’s a time when a number of Community groups get together with Bedford Borough Council to clear a particular stretch of the river and this year it starts by the Star Rowing Club. Come and see us there and talk about diving. We had experienced divers in the water, hunting out the dangerous items others have carelessly thrown away.

Dangerous items are not just those which block or project near the surface of the river; they are far more likely to be plastics which don’t breakdown completely even when in the the open sea! Those are the items we really worry about most – computers, traffic cones, road signs, bikes with plastic mud guards and shopping trolleys with plastic baby seats. All of these are regularly pulled out of the Great Ouse in Bedford in recent years The metal may rust or decay but tiny molecules of plastic remain to be eaten by fish and then – into the human food chain!! So it’s  not just plastic bags!

Community Projects like this are very important to us
